A Clinical Evaluation on Alopecia Areata



Abstract
A statistical observation of 189 cases with alopecia areata was performed in order to
evaluate the clinical manifestation and of treatment from January 1982 to July 1986 at the
Department of Dermatology, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University Hospital. The results were as follows
1) The incidence of alopecia areata was 1.0% (189 cases) of total 18,945 out-patients. 2) The sex ratio of male to female was 1. 1 :1(98:91).
3) The age distribution of alopecia areata was highest in third decade(45.6%).
4) The relapse rate was 13.3%.
5) The number of lesions was single in 51 cases(52.0%) of male patients and 44 cases (48.4%) of female patients.
6) The average area of balded patch was 5.5cm2 in both male and female. The most common range of area were 6 cm2 to 10 cm2 in male patients, 34 cases(35.1%), and below 5 cm2 in female patients, 36 cases(40.0%).
7) The most common site of predilection was occipital region in both male and female, which were 28 cases(28.6%) in male, 27 cases(29.7%) in female.
8) There were no statistically significant relationship between the effect of treatment and sex, age distribution, number of lesions, and duration of disease, but exception in area of balded patch.
